Our practice has developed and is tailored to providing legal services for farmers and lenders in the central valley. We work closely with accountants and advise clients regarding growing their business while limiting their liability and planning to transition the business to the next generation. Crabtree Schmidt represents executors, trustees, heirs and beneficiaries in all manner of litigation involving wills and trusts.

Crabtree Schmidt assists clients with all aspects of real estate law, including the initial real property purchase, leasing and managing client properties, advising clients regarding easements and boundary disputes, and property sales. Advising farm clients in a wide variety of legal matters including: real esate, entity formation to limit liability, contracts, business succession and estate planning.

We make it a point to educate ourselves on aspects of the law that significantly impact our farm clients in order to offer effective and comprehensive legal advice. We advise our business clients in all stages of business development, including buying or selling a business, selecting an appropriate entity to limit liability and developing business contracts.

Our firm's history dates back to 1936, when Les Cleary and William Zeff formed Cleary and Zeff.
Throughout our firm's history, our attorneys have frequently been appointed to judgeships.
William Zeff was appointed to the judgeship of the Stanislaus County Superior Court in 1965.
Edward Dean Price was appointed to the Federal Bench.
Hurl W. Johnson is a former partner and a retired judge, and is currently working as a mediator in Stanislaus County.
Thomas D. Zeff and Nan Cohan Jacobs were appointed to the Stanislaus County Superior Court and continue to serve as judges.

University of California at Davis, Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967; University of California, Hastings College of Law, Juris Doctorate in 1970.
Stanislaus County (Chairman, Education Committee, 1981-1982) and American Bar Associations; Mr. Schmidt has served in various capacities for the State Bar of California, including being a member of the State Bar Committee for Continuing Education of the Bar in the years 1976-1978, 1982-1985, and serving as Chairman in 1984-1985.
Mr. Schmidt further served as a member of the State Bar Governing Committee on Continuing Education of the Bar from 1985-1989, and served as Chairman of that State Bar Committee in 1989.

Although I'm originally from a small beach town in Southern California, I came north for law school, fell in love with the area, and never saw a reason to leave.
My roots are now solidly set in the Central Valley.
