Charleston Legal Access is Charleston's first nonprofit, sliding-scale law firm. We do not provide free legal services, but we will work at a price that those of moderate means can afford. Hourly rates are determined on an individual basis by a client's income and family size. Our initial screening and phone consultations with an attorney are completely free.
In-person, 1-2 hour case consultations and limited assistance sessions are available for a flat fee of $50-$100.

Wondering if you are eligible for our services?
We can handle civil matters including housing issues, education, consumer rights, benefits and civil rights.
Clients are eligible for our services if their income is between 125% and 400% of the federal poverty guidelines.
We are not taking criminal cases at this time.
Cases are selected based on the income guidelines, whether legal representation is likely to benefit the client, and the public interest in pursuing their claims.
We generally only take cases in Charleston County, Dorchester County, Berkeley County for reasons of efficiency; the benefit to a client of our lower rate is lost if clients are paying for travel time.
